What books would I recommend for Fibromyalgia holistic management? V.1

I am a great believer in self-help books. They have educated me often throughout my life and have helped with mental clarity and a greater understanding of my mind and body.

As a Holistic Therapist, I have been asked so many times over the years what I recommend as reading material and I always start with two books.

  1. Meditation and Mindfulness by Andy Puddicombe
  2. The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz

These two books I return to often and have read over and over so obviously I want to start my Fibromyalgia recommended reading here.

Yes, I could dive right in with a book specifically written for Fibromyalgia but I prefer to start at the beginning.

I never take it for granted that I am blessed by my past careers. A Nursing background has given me the confidence to take control of my own care and understand the terminology used by multidisciplinary teams. Being a complementary therapist has gifted me with the skills to combine conventional medicine with a holistic approach. Being a writer has given me the gift to record my mind and share my smiles with others. Buddhism and spiritual self-healing were how I coped.

This is why I am sharing these two books first as a coping tool for survival with Fibromyalgia. I had to create a set of coping mechanisms to ensure my day was filled with happiness so I could smile and get giddily excited about the small beautiful things in my life. I still do this now, by filling my world with rainbows.

The first year of my diagnosis with Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome was the hardest for me as I was still very much in the closet. Layer by layer I very slowly revealed who I was. First I had to develop mental clarity and a better mindset to start this journey of understanding myself as a woman with a long-term medical illness.

Meditation and Mindfulness was always part of my little world but I allowed life to get in the way of all I knew. Andy Puddicombe brought it all back for me in his book Meditation and Mindfulness. He spoke with words I understood and I learnt to accept all he wrote.

This wonderful soul is a former Buddhist monk and the UK's foremost mindfulness expert but he writes like he is your brother and you just understand his language. Prior to him I really felt many books over complicated meditation and mindfulness and spoke in a superior bulls*it language to confuse people, he doesn't.

Trust me, if this is the first time you have ventured into meditation and mindfulness with Fibromyalgia then this is the best place to start. Have a listen to him here:

The book is not a new publication so you will be able to grab a reduced preloved version on eBay or Amazon.

When we are in pain over bodies become rigid and we hold our bodies tight. Mindfulness and meditation is an essential tool for pain management also.

My next book changed me as a woman. If asked in an interview what book made the biggest impact on my life it would be this one. The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. The first time I read it I was in such a bad place within my head due to a toxic marriage and divorce, it became my bible. I read it so many times and tried so hard to implement the practices into my life.

The Four Agreements is a book that reveals the source of self-limiting beliefs that rob us of joy and create needless suffering. It is a simple easy to read yet the book yet very powerful.

This video is a great explanation of the contents of the book so have a watch.

Again the book is not a new publication so you will be able to grab a reduced preloved version on eBay or Amazon.
